About the film

What is data democracy? We are in an era where communities can interact with data in ways that were impossible to imagine a few short decades ago. While there are undoubted public benefits from accumulating, federating and aggregating data, both government and private institutional data use has in recent times been highly controversial, raising important questions about access, rights and community interest in the new digital and geospatial age.

The CeRDI documentary, produced by film makers Wind & Sky Productions, aims to inform and inspire discussion on the issues of fairness, access, sharing and communicating data in the technological era. It features leading experts Paul Box (CSIRO), Associate Professor Peter Dahlhaus (CeRDI), George Fong (ex-Internet Australia), Professor Richard Sinnott (University of Melbourne) and Dr Gillian Sparkes (Victorian Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability).

CeRDI is hosting a screening and panel discussion, and networking film launch event in collaboration with the FrontierSI Conference. In an engaging, interactive session of film and panellists we will explore issues such as: What is the role of government and industry in the data and geospatial arenas? How can data best be used for public interest decision making? What are the barriers? Where are the opportunities? Who is accountable and how?

Panellists:

  • Dr Gillian Sparkes, Victorian Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability
  • Dr Peter Woodgate, Chair, Australian Urban Infrastructure Network
  • Ms Jan Pierce, Deputy Chief Executive, Location Information, Land Information New Zealand
  • Panel Moderator: Associate Professor Peter Dahlhaus, Centre for eResearch and Digital Innovation, Federation University Australia
  • All attendees are invited to join us for a celebratory networking drink after the screening and panel discussion. For those attending the FrontierSI Conference dinner, the networking function will commence at 6.30pm and finish at 7.15pm allowing plenty of time to stroll to the dinner venue located adjacent to MCEC.
