The Wind & Sky Productions short documentary ‘Harbour Lights’ is part of the 2021 Melbourne Documentary Film Festival online!
The festival had originally planned to have in-cinema screenings this year but due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis in Victoria in July, August and September, the 2021 Melbourne Documentary Film Festival has converted to a virtual event screening online in October.
It is a lot of work behind the scenes to transfer an entire film festival to a virtual event and we send our thanks to the hard working Melbourne Documentary Film Festival team.

Film: The Last Goodbye
Info
Commissioned by: Australian and Victorian Governments
Produced: 2015
Length: 18 minutes
The Story
In 1914 Australia went to war. Thousands of young recruits passed through Ballarat on their way to the front, to prepare for battle and to say a last goodbye.
This documentary explores the meaning of remembrance and looks at the way the Great War changed us, through the eyes of the young people of Ballarat today.
The Memories of War Project
‘The Last Goodbye’ was part of the ‘Memories of War’ film and research project collaboration between the RSL Ballarat, Federation University Australia, the Gold Museum, the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka and Wind & Sky Productions.
The project connected with writing, history, drama and education students from Federation University Australia who explored what World War One was like for the people of Ballarat.
As part of the project community members were invited to produce content for the Gold Museum on the topic of ‘Memories of War’. Publication of content began in September 2015 and continues to be published. Contributions were diverse and included reflective essays, biographies, poems and performances.
Documentary Approach
From the stories, contributors, content and people unearthed in the project a film ‘The Last Goodbye’ was produced.
The film draws on the performances, reflections, findings and stories of researchers, curators, historians, writers, performers, artists and students of Ballarat.
The core principle of the film was that the narrative would be guided by the perspectives of the central contributors, and is an assemblage of the learning and the journey of local people who have worked on understanding WW1.
The film provides a view point on the way Ballarat has remembered the impacts and legacy of the Great War in this commemorative year.
It is a compilation of seated interviews with four young people who have researched, in various ways, the impact of WW1, interspersed with performed readings and reminiscences chosen by the performers themselves from texts provided by Ballarat-based historians. These live voices are complemented by a selection of historical photographs from local and international archival collections and with music of the WW1 era performed by the Graduating Actors of the Arts Academy.

The VVG Story.
by Lucinda Horrocks.
“How do you bring a story about technology and water science alive? That was our creative challenge with the Visualising Victoria’s Groundwater film.”
The mud sticks to our boots as we follow the cattle track, our heels sinking into the sodden earth, obliterating hoof prints. Thank God we remembered to bring boots, I think, as I cuddle the camera closer to my chest, my arms awkwardly clutched around the fragile box of plastic and buttons and glass it is my job to keep safe from the muck and the wet. The sky is a dark pattern of clouds but Jary has judged it won’t rain. He strides ahead up the hill carrying the tripod easily over his shoulder.
‘Memories of War’ project is underway
Wind & Sky Productions is delighted to announce the launch of the ‘Memories of War’ project web site.
Report of the First Week of December 2014
By Lucinda Horrocks 12 December 2014.
On the morning of the 3rd of December Jary and I woke blurry eyed, well before sunrise. At 3:30am we drove through a dark and silent Ballarat to Main Road, towards the glowing beacon of Sovereign Hill’s mining tower which after dark is always lit from below, where we joined a procession of cars in the otherwise empty street heading towards the museum’s entrance. At the brightly-lit reception, smiling staff in period costume ushered us, the blinking and the bewildered, into the museum’s 19th century streets.
So it started at 3am on the third of December. And it didn’t stop until Sunday the 7thth. In a special week, we got to celebrate many events to do with projects we have worked on over the last five years. Trust me, weeks like this are unusual.

Stories of Eureka
On December 3 1854, in Ballarat, a group of gold miners clashed with the local authorities in a bloody encounter which influenced the course of democracy in Australia.
We’ve been busy at Wind & Sky creating four digital stories about people connected to the Eureka Stockade for the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka (M.A.D.E Ballarat).
Come help us celebrate the launch of our films and the 160th anniversary of Eureka. There are a series of events on the actual anniversary day the 3rd of December and on the weekend of the 6-7 December.

Produced: 2014
Length: 2.40 minutes
St Brigid’s Church in Crossley, on the South West Coast of Victoria, was very nearly shut down until the local community made a stand to save it.
Regina Lane wrote a memoir about the community’s five year struggle to save the church and the hall their ancestors had built for them and their children a hundred years ago. She asked us to make a Pozible campaign video to help her publish the book, which could then be turned into a promotional film about the book once published. We said yes because we love Regina’s book, and we love this story of an Irish-Australian community that fought back. It’s an interesting example of how content can be re-used to meet different purposes. We hope you enjoy.
Regina’s book is out now. Details are available at savingstbrigids.com.au.
