Memories of War – The Last Goodbye
Film: The Last Goodbye
Info
Commissioned by: Australian and Victorian Governments
Produced: 2015
Length: 18 minutes
The Story
In 1914 Australia went to war. Thousands of young recruits passed through Ballarat on their way to the front, to prepare for battle and to say a last goodbye.
This documentary explores the meaning of remembrance and looks at the way the Great War changed us, through the eyes of the young people of Ballarat today.
The Memories of War Project
‘The Last Goodbye’ was part of the ‘Memories of War’ film and research project collaboration between the RSL Ballarat, Federation University Australia, the Gold Museum, the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka and Wind & Sky Productions.
The project connected with writing, history, drama and education students from Federation University Australia who explored what World War One was like for the people of Ballarat.
As part of the project community members were invited to produce content for the Gold Museum on the topic of ‘Memories of War’. Publication of content began in September 2015 and continues to be published. Contributions were diverse and included reflective essays, biographies, poems and performances.
Documentary Approach
From the stories, contributors, content and people unearthed in the project a film ‘The Last Goodbye’ was produced.
The film draws on the performances, reflections, findings and stories of researchers, curators, historians, writers, performers, artists and students of Ballarat.
The core principle of the film was that the narrative would be guided by the perspectives of the central contributors, and is an assemblage of the learning and the journey of local people who have worked on understanding WW1.
The film provides a view point on the way Ballarat has remembered the impacts and legacy of the Great War in this commemorative year.
It is a compilation of seated interviews with four young people who have researched, in various ways, the impact of WW1, interspersed with performed readings and reminiscences chosen by the performers themselves from texts provided by Ballarat-based historians. These live voices are complemented by a selection of historical photographs from local and international archival collections and with music of the WW1 era performed by the Graduating Actors of the Arts Academy.

Community Chef Case Study
NOT AVAILABLE ONLINE
These two films tell of the challenges, risks and benefits in taking a collaborative approach to community service delivery using the example of innovative delivered meals facility Community Chef.
Local Government Managers Australia (LGMA), in their role as part of the Australian Centre of Excellence for Local Government (ACELG) commissioned us to create a series of films which would bring their written case study of the Community Chef facility to life. Our challenge was to take the sometimes dry material and to transform it into a story. We wanted also to show the challenges and hurdles the project faced in a truthful light, without diminishing the innovation and true achievement it represented.

Natural Resource Management Planning Portal
Info
Client: Centre for eResearch and Digital Innovation (CeRDI)
Produced: 2016
Length: 6.55 minutes
The Landcare Groups in the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority region are trialling a planning model which could revolutionise how communities work together to care for our environment.
This short documentary film explores the impact of the Natural Resource Management (NRM) Planning Portal project from the perspectives of key users and researchers.
For nearly thirty years community volunteers in Landcare Groups have been looking after their local environment – cleaning up creeks and wetlands, managing weeds, erosion, salinity, looking after flora and fauna, generally caring about the health of their home.
Landcare Groups form their own local plans and priorities regarding weeds, water, soil health, pests and other categories, and apply for government, corporate or community funding to keep their work going. Together with the larger umbrella organisations the Catchment Management Authorities (CMAs), Landcare Groups form a vital part of the network of volunteer and institutional organisations taking care of the land, water and biodiversity of the regions.
The NRM Planning Portal, being piloted in the Corangamite CMA district, enables Landcare networks and their Catchment Management Authority partners to share information about past works and projects and to come up with joint priorities which have the best potential for funding. The Portal centres around the needs of Landcare Networks to develop a Local Catchment Plan and helps them do so by making lots of relevant planning information available to assist in identifying priorities (self determined, eg ‘weeds’, ‘pests’, ‘salinity’, ‘erosion’, for instance ) and presenting these visually on a map. These priorities can be compared with regional, state and national priorities to explore areas of intersection and best matches for funding.
