Watching the World Change through Victoria’s Museums Parks and Gardens

This month, the United Nations announced that nature is declining globally at rates unprecedented in human history, driven in part by climate change.
Evidence of this is crystal clear in Victoria, with a new online story called Collections and Climate Change showing how the Victorian Government has been taking steps to understand climate change impacts through Victoria’s cultural and scientific treasures.
The documentary film and gallery, now live on the Victorian Government Culture Victoria portal, explores how the information gathered and stored by Museums Victoria, Parks Victoria and the Royal Botanic Gardens gives insight into local climate related shifts in human, plant and animal life.

New film and digital exhibition celebrates Victoria’s Chinese goldrush history
An ambitious online project called Many Roads brings together the collections of eighteen Victorian cultural organisations, both metropolitan and regional, to tell the story of the Chinese on the goldfields of Victoria.
In the 1850s thousands of Chinese journeyed to the fabled goldfields of central, northern , northeastern and western Victoria. ‘The gold was what drew them here,’ says Anita Jack, General Manager of the Golden Dragon Museum and great grand daughter of a goldrush-era Chinese migrant. ‘Here in Bendigo at the peak of the gold rush a quarter were Chinese. The other three quarters were people from America, Europe, New Zealand, all across the world. It was a very multicultural time.’

Out of the Closets: Story of Melbourne’s Gay Liberation now online

A new digital exhibition using archival images, audio and documentary film recounts Melbourne’s gay liberation.
In 1970s Melbourne a group of students made a stand for gay pride at a time when homosexuality was criminalised and discrimination and abuse was widespread. A new digital exhibition Out of the Closets, Into the Streets explores the moment gay and lesbian people found their voice through the Gay Liberation Movement.

Canoe Project Sheds Light on Hidden Aboriginal History

A new project about bark canoes reveals a forgotten history of encounters between Aboriginal Victorians and settlers in the 1800s.
On the rivers of remote colonial Victoria, 19th century European settlers depended on Aboriginal navigators and canoe builders to transport goods, mail and people.
A documentary and multimedia project, now live on Culture Victoria, explores this little known aspect of colonial history through a short documentary film, image gallery, audio interviews and three short educational essays.
The film was screened on the Big Screen at Fed Square every day from the 5-11 July 2015 as part of NAIDOC week 2015.

The ten minute film ‘The Savoy Ladies Group’ follows Rosa Volpe, the group’s president, as she tells the story of Italians in the North-East, tobacco farming, women, family and friendship.
